Stronghold Battles Guide
« on: May 11, 2007, 05:01:59 PM »
Would you like to play a game of Warhammer at the Stronghold but just don't know how? Read this thread and I'll explain how to upload your units and get them on the net!

1. Deployment

So you have a list of your chosen army and have the templates:

Now you must open a paint document. Copy and Paste this template picture into the document.

Open another document and leave it blank for a moment. Back on your other document use the "Select" tool to select the unit type you want. When you have the right number of the correct models, Copy and Paste this section into the blank document. Do this multiple times until your army is on the blank document (select single or other numbers of the right base size for units of different numbers). Once you have a document with your army on it, feel free to fill in the units with colours of your choice. Once you have finished, save the final coloured document onto your computer as a Bitmap or PNG.

Now you have a document with your army templates on it you may want to get this onto the net to show your opponent. I would suggest www.photobucket.com to upload your images. Some others may use other techniques.

Firstly you must create an account and as you have an account on this website I'm assuming you know how to do that ;). Once you have one that it clearly tells you how to upload. Browse through your saved files to find the army document and then upload it into your album. Once it is uploaded it is simple. You will see the image appear with some options beneath. If you click on the IMG code one then it will automatically set this as copied. Then all you have to do is paste it into your battle thread and you have uploaded a picture.

Anyway, most of you will know how to do that and will really want to know what you do in Paint. When deploying units, you will need two Paint documents open at the same time. One will be blank and the other will be the "Army" document you created earlier. In the blank one, Copy and Paste the map for the battle. Next, transfer the units (using "Select" and Copy/Cut and Paste) onto the battlefield. Move the unit around to where you want it to go and when you're happy, click off it. If you have some tidying up to do then this is simple. Use the "Pick Colour" tool so you have the correct colour and just fill in the area that needs tidying. If you need to click zoom into "Large Size" and use the Paint Brush for more precise tidying. Once you have finished, save the document onto your computer (as a Bitmap or PNG) and to save space, you may as well overright it every time.

Once you have deployed your units you will need to move onto the next stage- Movement.

2. Movement

Movement is very simple. Use the "Select" tool again and select the unit in question. Move them fowards, backwards or anywhere you want (I will explain rotation next). Once you have finished you will need to do the tidying up that was explained last paragraph. If you want to, you may draw a line to show you're opponent where you have moved, but this is not cumpolsury.

Rotation will require a Photoshop of some variety. If you do as much as you can before and then Copy and Paste the Paint image of your Movement phase into a blank Photoshop document. All of these programmes have a Select and Rotate tool and therefore that should make it easier to understand. Once you have finished, select the image and Copy and Paste the document back into Paint, doing any lining up you need to do. From here, upload it as a normal Paint document.

3. Dice Rolling

This could be argued to come first but as long as you have read it then you should survive ;).

There are two different dice rollers:

http://hamete.org/dserver/dice

http://www.irony.com/igroll.html

The reason there are two is because Kyte issued the first one for the tournament.

When using Hamete, treat the Dice Roll as a normal picture. Right click, Save As..., Upload into Photobucket.

When using Irony, Copy and Paste the roll into the battle thread. It is useful for your opponent (and yourself) if you quote this. It makes it all the easier to read. For example:

Quote
Roll Results

You requested that 1 roll of 4 6-sided dice be rolled.

Roll them bones ... your dice are

Roll 1: 4, 5, 6, 1 = 16.

However you roll, if you are rolling for wounds it is always useful for your opponent if you put the amount of wounds (and armour save reduction) in bold type. For example:

3 Wounds at -1 on your Ironguts

Now I guess I have explained enough. Ask questions in this thread if you are still unsure of something. Now here are the templates you will need once more:

On the battlefield, add as much or as little terrain as you want by playing around with the tools. Have a look at somemother threads for inspiration and examples.

Thanks

Great post Shavis, very helpful to those who don't have idea one about how all this WFO stuff goes down.  The only thing I have to add is that you should save as .PNG, as it's small and doesn't distort when reloaded and resaved.  That, and I really suggest using http://www.tinypic.com to upload your pics, because it is fast, doesn't require an account and gives you the UBB code you need to have the image appear in your post.

Cheers for the pet Corai and Lexy, I'll just have that left arm for now. :P.

@Boss_Salvage. I have always used a Photobucket account and don't really know what to do on tinypic (I never saw a point trying ;))

Thanks

There is a scale marker in inches across all four sides of the green playing map.

Hope that helps

I actually made a little ruler along the edge of a folded piece of card, marked off to match the side of the map's ruler.  Worlds of useful, though I'm sure it's gotten people suspicious at work

That's a really great idea Boss_Salvage, and it'll make diagonal measuring alot easier.
If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

The scale works out to 10 pixels = 1 inch, right?

Yeah, 10 paint pix looks about right.  Which means I might need to remake my ruler, I was measuring to vaguely between numbers, not the bottom of the next number ...

And on the ruler, the only problem is you have to use the same computer, or at least with the same resolution.  My ruler from work doesn't work at home :x

Hello, I slapped together a quick template template, because I didn't see any in this thread, and the ones in battle-reports seemed a bit cobbled together.
I don't know how exact they are, but I'm pretty sure I got them within less than a quarter-inch in most dimensions.  Anyone with a bit more experience in Photoshop or something could probably throw something together a lot better, but I figured I'd stick it in here just because.

Good call, been meaning to make up official templates for a while now, and I might just need a flame template soon ...

Remember that 1" = 10 pixels, so the 5" template should be 50 pix diameter and the 3" is 30 pix.  I haven't checked yours out yet, but something to keep in mind.

Speaking of which, what are the dimensions on the flame template?  I keep forgetting to measure mine when I'm home ;)

(that sounds so dirty :x)

I guess you just have to hope for honesty, but how do you know that your opponent doesn't just keep hitting the dice rolling program until he gets the result he's looking for and then post that up?

Also the Applemac doesn't come with anything to draw on like paint (don't...I know). does that exclude me from playing until I buy something?

Yep.  WFO doesn't work without trust.  As tempting as it is to fudge a roll or two, where's the fun in that?  The diceroller is a cruel mistress, but like in a real game them's the breaks.

I'm sure there's some very free, easily downloadable image programs for Mac?  MSPaint is pretty bare bones, you really just need to be able to color match (eye dropper), manipulate pixels and save as .png ...  Though the PNG might be hard, as I think it's ms paint specific?  Maybe?
